Don Carlos - The Arks

Our second Don Carlos projects were the two arks, which called for a more sturdy wood type and a black granite texture.

The arks started off as hallow wooden boxes just over 2 meters in length, albeit out of much thicker wood than the type the Marble Towers were constructed out of.

The edges were smoothened and holes were cut out on the sides, as a way for the arks to be carried. The insides were painted black, while the outsides were white and later covered in several cement layers to make the surfaces as even as possible.

The arks were then painted in a thick layer of black, ready for the granite texture...which was slightly tricky to nail down.
The red and blue hues ended up making a cool cosmic look.
Posting this purely for future reference.

The granite was supposed to have these dark ''clouds'' on an already black surface. This meant experimentation with hues was in order, which generally involved taking black paint and adding a different amount of white to find the right shade.

A touch of blue and red were added to some of the samples, but they popped out too much on the black, so the colors were eventually dropped.

The ''clouds'' were eventually applied with a coral sponge and later glazed over with varnish.

Later some white dots were carefully splattered on with a thick brush, soaked in a mix of water and paint.

Finally, we added some strips of rough material to the bottom edges, to prevent heavy drag.
